“Argentina 1985” recounts the history of the legal proceedings of the military juntas that governed Argentina between the 1976 coup and the return of democracy in 1983. Five high-ranking military officers were convicted of crimes against humanity, among them Videla and Massera, who were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The promoters who came up ahead of the case were Júlio Strassera (played by Ricardo Darín) and a group of young promoters, whose leader was Luis Moreno Ocampo, a role in charge of Peter Lanzani.
There are 709 cases judged, but it is estimated that there are thousands of disappeared persons, many of whom have never been found. The victims of torture who managed to survive will recount in detail the aberrational crimes committed against them and against other people. Some two testimonials were more and avôs de filhos and clearly disappeared.
The true promoter Luis Moreno Ocampo said, in a television interview for CNN, that "Argentina, as always, oscillates between the top and the abyss." In 1985, Justiça Civil did something totally unexpected to try to hit the mole, after the country had fallen into the abyss.
The film was exhibited at the festivals of Venice and São Sebastião. Ganhou or Golden Globe 2023 in the category of best foreign language film. For those who can't see it in the cinemas, the film is available on Amazon Prime Video.
The main actors will study the characters in their smallest details, based on television programs, photographs, film archives and interviews.
Despite being a fiction, numerous documental sources integrated in post-production are used: for example, depositions and television and radio speeches. The images of the public applauding or the guilty verdict is a result of images of the time mixed with actual filmagens.
The documentary photographs that are shown during the end credits are also archive photographs.
The cinematographer has the attention of choosing elevators, telephones and typewriters, not in the style of two years '80's
The film is shown in real locations: the Palace of Justice, the bars where the lawyers who work in the Tribunals usually meet, or the dance hall of the military circle.
At the same time, see how the process affects the family environment of two protagonists. In this sense, the two main promoters are going through an important transformation. From bureaucrats of the Judiciary System, accustomed to spending hours traversing files on writing machines, suddenly happen to receive a task that exceeds them, to be investigators of crimes against humanity, and in the end they become the moral voice of society and are called heroes no cape
The promoter Strassera fears that he will have to fight against his own means, of being assassinated or that someone from the military structure wants to take revenge on his family. He also has to fight against the telephone threats and against the passivity of the other two attorneys who have finished their careers and do not want to be fired for their charges. That is why Strassera put together a team of young inexperienced lawyers who in the end are seen as performing an excellent job.
The music, mainly the songs with lyrics, were chosen to create an atmosphere according to the situation of the moment. From the orchestral music of Wagner, Verdi and Villa Lobos to performers of Argentine Rock such as Charly García, Los Abuelos de la Nada. It is a famous tango by Astor Piazzolla.
The main objective of this film was to ensure that the youngest generation of Argentines knew or was told that they had a title in the country. The film updates the historical memory for the new generations, imitating the promoter Strassera when at the end of the film he declaims: “Senhores Juízes, Nunca Mais”.
